1794 H10C AU58 NGC. V-3, LM-3, R.4. All of the 1794 half dimes were actually struck in 1795. Mint records prove this, as the first delivery warrant for half dimes was dated March 30, 1795. Careful study of die use, known as the emission sequence, reveals that the 1794 and 1795 dies were used interchangeably, so it is not possible to determine the exact mintage of either date. This delightful near-Mint example has nearly full luster beneath gunmetal and steel toning, with cobalt-blue and forest-green peripheral accents. Faint abrasions and scratches are consistent with the grade. (PCGS# 4250)

1795 H10C XF45 PCGS. V-5, LM-8, R.3. The recorded mintage of 86,416 half dimes included both 1794- and 1795-dated pieces, but NGC and PCGS have certified about three times as many 1795 pieces. On this variety there is no berry inside or outside of the U in UNITED, and a spike protrudes from the wreath and points between the first T and A of STATES. An obverse die crack runs through the Y in LIBERTY. This piece shows some luster remaining under deep pinkish-gray toning, with an arc of iridescent blue on the left obverse rim. There are no individually relevant marks. (PCGS# 4251)

1863-S H10C MS66 NGC. This piece ranks among the finer existing examples of the date. During the middle of the Civil War, silver production in Philadelphia was limited, and those pieces coined did not circulate. In San Francisco, mintages were generally higher, but most of the coins immediately entered circulation and Gem or finer quality examples survived in extremely limited quantities. This sharply struck piece has exquisite detail and frosty luster. The obverse exhibits considerable gold toning and the reverse is mostly brilliant. Census: 2 in 66, 1 finer (4/07). (PCGS# 4383)
