1879-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. Perfect Mintmark. The 1879-CC had a low mintage of only 756,000 pieces, and then a couple of hundred thousand coins may have been melted under the Pittman Act of 1918. These two events created a coin that is seldom seen in mint condition outside major auctions. This is an especially attractive example that is brilliant throughout. The fields show a faint glimmer of semi-reflectivity, and the striking details are fully brought up in all areas. A milling mark on the cheek of Liberty and another across the eagle's breast prevent a full Gem classification of this lovely coin. (PCGS# 7086)

1880-CC $1 MS65 NGC. Considerable contrast is noted on each side, although unrecognized on the holder, with much luster and untoned brilliance. The strike leaves a few roller marks on the hair above the ear, but these CC dollars in GSA slabs and graded by NGC have enduring popularity, in addition to their obvious aesthetic appeal. 1892-CC $1 MS65 PCGS. This nearly brilliant Gem has flashy luster and splendidly smooth surfaces. The hair above the ear and the eagle's breast show only a hint of incompleteness. 1893-CC $1 MS64 PCGS. The 1893-CC Morgan dollar is a collector's favorite because of its scarcity and its position as the last Carson City Mint coin of its denomination. The issue does not come without its problems, however. In his Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States, David Bowers says: "Of all Carson City Mint Morgan dollars, the 1893-CC is notorious for being very heavily bagmarked. The vast majority of Mint State coins are in lower levels and have extensive marking. High-grade mark-free coins are very rare."

Radiant luster exudes from the well preserved, essentially untoned surfaces of this near-Gem specimen. A few inoffensive luster grazes just barely preclude full Gem status, and a strong impression left relatively sharp detail in the hair over Liberty's ear and on the breast feathers. Light die cracks encircle the margins on both obverse and reverse. (PCGS# 7222)

1895-S $1 MS65 PCGS. This is a scarce San Francisco Mint issue which has seen relatively few survivors from a mintage of 400,000 pieces. It is exceedingly scarce at the Gem level of preservation, and, in his Encyclopedia, Bowers states: "MS-65 or finer specimens are truly rare, and I estimate that only about 50 to 100 remain."

The current offering is a flashy Gem that displays semi-prooflike fields and a slight degree of milky patina. The design elements are boldly struck, except for minor softness just above Liberty's ear and on the eagle's breast feathers. There are only a few small marks on each side of the coin. 1896-O $1 MS64 PCGS. Another Morgan dollar in this auction in memorable condition aesthetically, and near the top of the Condition Census numerically, the present piece has been exceeded by exactly a half-dozen Gem coins, namely three each at NGC and PCGS (4/07). The Bowers Morgan dollar Guide Book (2005) quotes silver dollar expert Wayne Miller concerning this issue, "No other Morgan dollar is as consistently deficient in luster, strike, and degree of surface abrasions as the 1896-O. In [Miller's] opinion the 1896-O is the rarest of all Morgan dollars (even more than 1901) in truly gem condition."

The present coin is not a Gem, but it is one grade point below, and appears considerably high-end for the MS64 ranking assigned to it. The surfaces are brilliant, with a slight patina of silver-gold in the largely untoned centers. A thin peripheral crescent of deep amber-gold, magenta, and russet is noted on the upper obverse, while the reverse is startlingly untoned, lustrous, and brightly radiant. The sharp strike has brought up most of the detail in the eagle's breast and the individual feathers in the wings, as well as on the often-weak leaves in the wreath below the eagle. On the obverse the hair above Liberty's ear shows only minor weakness. Close examination with a loupe reveals a couple of small milling marks on Liberty's cheek, along with a larger tick behind Liberty's cap, in the right obverse field, that cumulatively help to determine the grade. Elsewhere there are few mentionable abrasions, especially on the high-end reverse.

This coin represents an elusive opportunity to obtain such a significant and conditionally rare Morgan dollar for a fine set. Population: 23 in 64, 3 finer (4/07). (PCGS# 7242)

The Gem presented here is an obvious exception. While not necessarily full, the strike is solid; nice delineation is apparent in Liberty's hair. Untoned surfaces exhibit dazzling luster, and both sides are impeccably preserved. PCGS has seen only six pieces finer. (PCGS# 7359)

1996 1C Lincoln Cent--Deep Die Cap Obverse--MS64 Red PCGS. A struck cent (not the present piece) failed to eject from the dies. A planchet (to become the present lot) was fed between the obverse die and the struck cent. The strike gave the present piece a brockage reverse, and forced the obverse partly around the edge of the obverse die. Additional strikes caused the cent to further wrap around the obverse die, while the brockage reverse image expanded and distorted. Incused and reversed portions of the date and LIBERTY are still legible on the reverse. Some of the zinc interior has penetrated the copper plating. The cap is sufficiently deep that it can barely fit within the standard PCGS holder.
