Description
1836 Cap and Rays Gold Dollar Pattern
Judd-67, Dazzling PR64
1836 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR64 NGC.
CAC. The obverse is modeled after the Cap and Rays design seen
on contemporary Mexican coins. The reverse has a beautifully
engraved palm frond encircling the inner denomination 1/D., outside
the palm frond is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck in gold with a
plain edge. Coin alignment with no die cracking, indicating this is
an original strike. These intriguing pieces are one of the few gold
patterns that are relatively affordable and occasionally available.
The scope of the patterns offered in this auction gives the
collector an unprecedented opportunity to select from several
examples. This particular piece is bright yellow-gold and the
fields display deep, mirrorlike reflectivity. The devices are also
noticeably frosted, but apparently not enough to warrant such a
designation by NGC. The only identifying "flaw" is a small alloy
spot on the obverse near the 11 o'clock position.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26VC, PCGS# 11260, Greysheet# 11979)
