Description

Uncirculated Sharpness
1861-C Five Dollar

1861-C $5 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Variety 1. Only 6,879 half eagles were struck at the Charlotte Mint in 1861, the last year of operations for that facility. Per Breen, 887 of those pieces were delivered by the C.S.A. in May 1861. This coin shows the reverse die break through the letters in AMERI that indicate the final die state of this issue, so this coin is potentially one of those issued after the Mint was seized. The strike is good and no wear is evident, but the surfaces are mildly bright from a wipe.(Registry values: P6)
