Important 1803 O-104 Small 3 Half, AU55

1803 50C Small 3 AU55 NGC. O-104, R.3. If not distinguishable by size, the Small 3 1803 halves can be differentiated from their Large 3 counterparts by the lack of a vertical serif on the 3. Of similar scarcity to the Large 3 coins, the Small 3 halves are under stronger collector pressure as they are only represented by a single obverse-reverse die pairing.
This piece was struck from a nearly perfect obverse die. A fine die crack from the border passes through the left arm of the T in LIBERTY to the left base of the same letter. The reverse has a crack through the first S, the clouds below ATE, and up through the E to the final S. Moderate clash marks are seen on both sides.
This is a remarkable example of the Small 3 variety with sharp design details near the centers and slight weakness at the border. Both sides have satiny heather surfaces with lighter gray on the reverse. The toning gradually darkens close to the border.
This piece ranks as the third or fourth finest example of the Small 3 variety.
