Impressive 1876 Liberty Octagonal 25 Cents, BG-780, Superb Gem

1876 25C Liberty Octagonal 25 Cents, BG-780, R.4, MS67 NGC. It is amazing that this minuscule piece has been so carefully preserved for more than 130 years. Although it is not known for certain who struck these specimens, recent die and punch linking has led some researchers to believe that they were produced by Herman J. Brand of San Francisco. This splendid yellow-gold piece has numerous die polish lines in the fields and as a result it exhibits dazzling reflectivity throughout, although NGC has neglected to designate it Prooflike. The strike is razor-sharp, with full dentilation on both sides, save for just a touch of weakness on the AR in DOLLAR, as usual. This variety features a repunched C in CAL, after the first C was punched too low. Close examination with a loupe reveals clash marks from Liberty on the reverse. A spectacular representative. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (7/08).
