Description
High-End 1870 Standard Silver Quarter
Tied for Finest Certified
Judd-900, PR66
1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-900, Pollock-1015,
R.5, PR66 NGC. Design. The obverse die is centered around a bust of Liberty facing right, wearing a headband with one star and the inscription LIBERTY. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the bust, with a scroll inscribed with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST below. The reverse features the denomination 25 CENTS and the date encircled in an agricultural wreath, with the word STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
Commentary. USPatterns.com states that Judd-900 was produced for sale to collectors in sets with other denominations and designs for $15.00. An early auction appearance of such a set was in the Parmelee Collection (New York Coin & Stamp, 6/1890), lot 212, "1870 50c., 25c., 10c. STANDARD set: same obv. as on lot 194: three designs for each value. R values and dates in wreaths of corn, cotton and sugar; STANDARD in small letters above: silver: proofs: milled edges; 9 pcs." If Parmelee paid $15.00 for this set, he suffered a considerable loss, as the lot sold for $0.40 per piece. Unwary collectors have similar experiences today, with televised marketing of "special" Mint products.
Physical Description. A stunning Premium Gem proof that probably deserves a Cameo designation, although this piece is not designated as such. Both sides are sharply detailed, the obverse with vibrant rose, violet, and blue toning. The reverse is fully mirrored with toning that ranges from pale champagne to deep gold. A splash of lilac is also present. NGC Census: 2 in PR66, a single PR66 ★ is finer. PCGS Population: 2 in PR66, none finer, with a single PR64 Cameo (12/08).
Provenance. Ex: Alto Collection (Stack's, 12/1970), lot 783.
