Impressive 1882 Three Cent Nickel, PR68 Cameo

1882 3CN PR68 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Filled 2. After an enormous (for the series) mintage of more than 1 million business strikes in 1881, the mintages of both proofs and business strike three cent nickels in 1882 plummeted. This is perhaps because so many 1882 Shield nickels were issued, a gigantic coinage in excess of 11 million pieces, as Philadelphia Mint personnel geared up to introduce the new Liberty five cent nickel in 1883. The pristine, mirrored fields complement chalky, equally well preserved frosty features. A touch of streaky reddish color coats both sides. Inspection with a glass leaves the viewer just as impressed as a casual glance, the sure sign of an outstanding proof type coin. A virtually unimprovable specimen. Population: 4 in 68 Cameo, 0 finer (5/09).(Registry values: N2998)
