Description
Extremely Scarce 1882 Shield Nickel Pattern, Judd-1693, Pollock-1895, Low R.7.
1882 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-1693, Pollock-1895, Low R.7, PR63 PCGS. The dies are similar to those used on the regular issue 1882 Shield nickel, but the base of the shield is designed differently, lacking the ornamental ball. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This modified design was also struck in copper, aluminum, and white metal. Deeply mirrored, the devices are also nicely frosted and give a strong contrast against the reflective surfaces. Brilliant throughout, save for faint cloudiness in the fields. Tiny retained laminations (as struck) are noted on each side, but do not impact either the grade or the eye appeal of the piece.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2AKF, PCGS# 62098, Greysheet# 15066)
