Description

Fourth Finest 1795 S-76a Cent

1795 1C Lettered Edge AU53 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-76a, R.5. The S-76 die combination is a transitional issue, struck during the change from heavier lettered edge planchets to lighter plain edge flans. A few examples are known on thick planchets with the edge unlettered, and still fewer are known on thin planchets with a lettered edge. An early die state with light clash marks, primarily on the reverse. This is fourth finest known for the variety according to Del Bland, an important Condition Census offering. The surfaces have mottled steel, tan, and reddish brown color with a few minor edge bruises. Bill Noyes considers the surfaces on this coin to be "scudzy" although we feel he may be overly critical in his observation. In the Kuntz catalog, Superior stated that this was sixth finest known, apparently based on the census notes of Bill Noyes.
