Description

PR63 Transitional 1858 Indian Cent, Judd-208

1858 P1C Indian Cent, Judd-208, Pollock-259, R.1, MS63 NGC. Snow-PT28. Die Pair 1. This pattern cent is significantly rarer than the 1856 Flying Eagle cent, also a pattern but widely collected as part of the regular Flying Eagle and Indian Head cent series. This pattern, however, is not "universally thought of as part of the regular set," as Snow phrases it. The obverse is the regular Indian Head cent design as adopted in 1859, with five-leaf clusters on the reverse and a broad point on the bust truncation. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge from slightly rotated dies, as often seen. This piece shows olive-tan surfaces that are glossy and lustrous, with a couple of scattered flecks of carbon.
