Pleasing Choice AU 1795 13 Leaves Eagle, BD-1

1795 $10 13 Leaves AU55 NGC. Breen-6830, Taraszka-1, BD-1, High R.3. Obverse State a, Reverse State a, none of the cracks mentioned in Bass-Dannreuther visible. Obverse distinguished by lumps near the left upper serif of the Y in LIBERTY and close nearby star; the most obvious reverse characteristic is the near-contact between a lower leaf and the U of UNITED.
The BD-1 is most notable for its relative availability in the context of the year. As noted in the Bass and Dannreuther reference Early U.S. Gold Coin Varieties:

"The estimated mintage for the variety [between 2,795 and 5,583 pieces] is based on knowledge that this is the most often seen of the five varieties of 1795. There are more than 200 examples of this variety; only this and BD-2 ... are usually available Small Eagle varieties. BD-2, however, has less than half the number known, right around 100 coins. BD-4 has about half that number or a few more that have survived, while BD-5 likely has fewer than 50 known."

Despite its comparatively high survival rate, the BD-1 leaves hordes of early gold enthusiasts chasing examples of a die variety that is scarce in an absolute sense. The present Choice AU example is a well-detailed survivor, honey-gold with faintly granular surfaces that show a number of light ticks. The centers of the stars and the high points of the devices exhibit trifling wear, and neither side shows any individually mentionable abrasions. An interesting candidate for type and die variety collectors alike.
