Description

Historic Premium Gem Proof 1914 Indian Eagle

1914 $10 PR66 NGC. A stellar coin for the specialist that boasts excellent surfaces and delightful, satiny yellow color. The surfaces are clean and attractive, with a couple of trivial hairlines keeping this from perfection. Visually appealing and carefully preserved, the present coin appears to be virtually unchanged since the day it was coined. All proof gold of this period is rare, and when found in Gem or finer grades presents an opportunity for the astute buyer. The proof mintage for the year is 50 pieces, a mere 50 coins struck to memorialize this date in proof. While most apparently survived, there are few that have come down to us that merit such a lofty grade. The proofs of 1914 were struck using a fine sandblast finish. This coining technique imparts a microscopic granularity to the surface of the fields and devices that perfectly match in color and surface texture. Examination with a magnifier will discover the fascinating microscopic facets that cover the surfaces. As the coin is turned, these tiny facets twinkle and flash like so many stars in the galaxy, a mesmerizing effect that is unique to the proof gold coins of the period. Any collector who has seen these sparkling facets will appreciate the mastery of these secret minting techniques used to create this remarkable effect. A thoroughly satisfying example for the connoisseur that will undoubtedly dazzle the new owner every time the coin is viewed.
America was swept along in the world tide of building armaments for the coming World War in late 1914. Factories were swamped with orders for machines and for the chemicals and gunpowder needed by many nations. Gold and silver were hoarded, and our national focus swung from the idealism of the early century to the realities of war. America stayed out of the conflict for a few more years as the European countries were swept along by the flood of fear and anger. Somehow this coin passed through this period of turmoil to come down to us today, a stunning reminder of the year that conflict enveloped so many nations. This is the finest example we have sold of this issue, and in fact only the fourth time Heritage has offered a proof example of this date. That gives the collector some perspective on just how elusive this coin is in proof, and this lovely Premium Gem will certainly be the centerpiece of an advanced collection.
