Description
Near-Mint 1862-S Quarter Eagle
Elusive in Uncirculated Grades
1862-S $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS. The 1862-S quarter eagle saw a
small mintage of 8,000 coins. A quick flip through the Guide
Book will show that the each successively larger gold
denomination had larger mintages, with the double eagle by far the
largest. An AU58 PCGS coin such as the present piece is tied with
five such submissions at the lower end of the Condition Census at
that service, as PCGS has certified only three Mint State examples,
one in MS62 and two in MS61 (10/11). The lovely orange-gold
surfaces on this near-Mint State piece show a bold strike with only
a few minor ticks characteristic of the grade.(Registry values: P2)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25K2, PCGS# 7798, Greysheet# 8392)
