Exceptional MS68 1897-O Half Dollar--Tied For Finest Known

1897-O 50C MS68 NGC. Ex: Andre Dawson. When we cataloged this coin seven years ago we declared it to be the finest known of the issue. We also noted in the description at that time that another MS68 had been certified (by PCGS) and speculated that this was likely the same coin. We now know that is not true as the Goldbergs sold the PCGS coin in 2002 (for $25,300). Nevertheless, being tied for finest known is still quite an honor for a coin such as an 1897-O half. In fact, both of the branch mint 1897 issues represent a significant challenge for the date collector in AU and higher grades. Only 632,000 pieces were struck of this issue, at a time when average production was over two million pieces for half dollars. So, when average production was that low for a high mintage issue in the half dollar series, it tends to make up for the lack of standout rarities as in the dime and quarter series with the 1894-S and 1901-S respectively. Only a few dozen uncirculated examples of the 1897-O are known to survive and very few are known in Gem condition.
This amazing specimen gives the appearance of a newly minted coin, being untoned and incredibly frosty with hardly a blemish to be found. Only under close scrutiny can a few well scattered, microscopic frost breaks be seen on the obverse. The strike is fully executed in all areas and the vibrancy of the luster is perhaps its greatest attribute.(#6478) (Registry values: N7079)
