Description

(1834-37) Bechtler Five Dollar, AU50
Carolina Gold, K-17, Plain Edge

(1834-37) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 140G. 20C, RUTHERFORD. AU50 NGC. K-17, R.5. Plain Edge. For many years, the gold coinage of the United States did not circulate because the intrinsic value of the coins was greater than the face value. The weight of the federal gold coins was adjusted in 1834 to remedy this situation, and Christian Bechtler followed suit, placing the date of the federal authorization--AUGUST 1.1834.--on the obverse of his privately issued five dollar gold pieces. Bechtler minted nine different varieties of five dollar gold coins during this period. This coin represents the scarce K-17 variety of Carolina gold, with a period after RUTHERFORD and a period replacing the colon between C and BECHTLER.
The present coin is a lightly circulated example, with a few minor abrasions and rim bruises, but all original detail still legible. Census: 1 in 50, 13 finer (10/10).

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2B9R, PCGS# 10112, Greysheet# 11722)
