Description

1862 Liberty Twenty, AU58
Low-Mintage Civil War Date

1862 $20 AU58 NGC. With the outcome of the Civil War in doubt, the mintage of double eagles from the Philadelphia Mint dropped from nearly 3 million pieces in 1861 to 92,000+ pieces in 1862; examples are accordingly rare in all grades. Most coins seen are in the XF and the lower AU range. High-end AU and Mint State pieces are infrequently seen.
The present near-Mint State specimen boasts lightly abraded and delightful orange-gold surfaces with just a trace of high-point wear and a generous amount of luster. The design elements are well impressed, including nice detail in all obverse star centrils. A couple of reeding marks are noted on Liberty's cheek. Census: 17 in 58, 11 finer (3/11).(Registry values: N2998)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 269M, PCGS# 8937, Greysheet# 9799)
