The Finest Known 1803 O-103 Half Dollar

1803 50C Large 3 AU55 PCGS. O-103, R.3. This coin is listed as the finest known example of O-103 in the March 2001 edition of Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for R.4 to R.8 and Popular Varieties of Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839. It is identifiable by a pair of small abrasions in the reverse field above the cluster of arrows. A simply gorgeous example from the standpoint of originality, the obverse displays target toning in golden-blue and lavender-gray shades. The former color is most readily evident on the reverse, but orange-gold accents are also evident near the rims. There is much underlying luster, this being satiny in texture, and the strike is well centered with bold overall definition.
Ex: Mail Bid Sale # 16 (Sheridan Downey, 1/96), lot 11, where it realized $5,082.
