Extremely Rare 1836 Reeded Edge Half Dollar, Proof 63 Cameo PCGS

1836 50C Reeded Edge PR63 Cameo PCGS. On November 8, 1836, Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson presented ten specimen strikings of the new Reeded Edge Half Dollar to Treasury Secretary Levi Woodbury. According to Patterson, the specimens, or proofs, were intended to show the superior striking quality of the new steam press/closed collar combination. Writing in 1977, Walter Breen asserted that he knew of at least 11 examples. Although we do not know the pedigree of the present example, it is one of only five examples to receive a PR63 grade from PCGS and it is bettered by five pieces (7/04). Presently, this is the only example designated "cameo" that has been certified. This is an important representative of this key issue that shows thick golden-tan toning over lightly marked surfaces. A thin "V" shaped abrasion is seen in the reverse field above the eagle's neck should serve as a useful pedigree marker. The striking details are uncommonly strong for the series with finely detailed hair curls on Liberty and fully articulated plumage on the eagle. The minute doubling on the denticles over UNITED and at the base of 50 CENTS, as well as the minute die crack that extends from the rim into the field between STATES and OF, are diagnostic features of this proof issue. A historically significant coin, this rare proof specimen would form the centerpiece of any advanced collection. (#6223) (Registry values: N7079)
