Description

Highly Elusive 1852 Seated Dollar, XF45 PCGS

1852 $1 XF45 PCGS. Continuing with its policy of the previous year, the Philadelphia Mint limited Silver Dollar production in 1852 to just 1,100 coins. Like the 1851, the 1852 did not circulate widely, if at all, at the time of issue. Most examples were probably melted, and the worn specimens that have survived were pulled from circulation in the mid-19th century (per Bowers, 1993). This lot offers a deeply toned, olive-brown example whose surfaces reveal halos of lighter, steel-gray patina around many of the devices. The denticles below the 2 in the date have been tooled, although this is only obvious upon careful inspection with a loupe. Otherwise, there are no readily evident abrasions, and the well struck devices display only even wear across the highpoints. A definite find for the Seated Dollar date collector.
