Description

Rarely Seen Gem 1865 Gold Dollar

1865 G$1 MS65 PCGS. With a limited original mintage of 3,700 pieces and an extant population of perhaps only 85 coins, the 1865 Dollar is an understandably important issue among collectors who specialize in Civil War era gold. The typical Mint State representative is weakly struck in the centers with distracting clashmarks and/or striations. Not so the present coin. Both sides are smooth from rim to rim with fully brought up devices in all areas. The luster is also superior for the issue, and moderately bright fields peer through rich orange-gold coloration. Very rare in Gem condition with only seven other pieces so graded by PCGS and seven others finer (10/03).(#7564) (Registry values: P2, N5800)
