Description
Finest Graded 1897-O MS 68 Half Dollar
1897-O MS 68 NGC. Ex: Dawson. The Barber half dollar series is different from its more diminutive counterparts in that there are no standout rarities like the 1894-S dime or 1901-S quarter. One of the long respected issues in the series, and for good reason, is the 1897-O, one of just 632,000 pieces struck when an average production would exceed 2 million coins. Only a few dozen uncirculated examples of the 1897-O are known to survive and it is even more infrequently found in or near gem condition. This amazing specimen gives the appearance of a newly minted coin, being untoned and incredibly frosty with hardly a blemish to be found. Only under close scrutiny can a few well scattered, microscopic frost breaks be seen on the obverse. The strike is fully executed in all areas and the vibrancy of the luster is perhaps its greatest attribute. In all likelihood, this is the same coin that received an MS 68 rating at PCGS, and if that is the case, we can unhesitantly declare this splendid '97-O half dollar to be the finest known. Population: 1 in 68, none finer (7/98).
