Description

Rare Chapman Proof 1921 Morgan Dollar

1921 Chapman PR 62 PCGS. Qualitatively different than the "Zerbe" proofs, the Chapman proof Morgan dollars have deeper reflectivity in the fields. They also more closely resemble proofs from 1902-04, but often do show some contrast between the fields and devices. Only twelve were allegedly struck, but that number may be inaccurate as 20 examples have thus far been graded by PCGS (6/95), the finest being a PR 63.
This piece has good depth of reflectivity in the fields with a light cameo contrast. Lightly hairlined, the evidence of the cleaning has been obscured by a layer of golden-gray toning equally distributed on both sides. There is no evidence of coin-to-coin contact, and the planchet shows no flaking as did the Chapman proof we offered in the October, 1991 Long Beach Sale. A very significant rarity in the Morgan dollar series.
