Heritage World Coin Auctions offers rarities in May Long Beach Signature Sale

Dallas, Texas: Heritage, the official auctioneer of the May 2003 Long Beach Coin Expo, realized over $6 million total with its World, Ancients, and U.S. Signature Sales and a Bullet Sale held between May 29 and June 2. Heritage World Coin Auctions conducted separate sessions of Ancient and World coinage, which together achieved total prices realized of over $770,000.

HWCA Director Warren Tucker noted, “Without a doubt, the highlight of the sale was the Newfoundland 1888 50 Cent piece. Encapsulated by PCGS as Specimen 64, it is the only known example with that finish. No other pieces are believed to have survived in Uncirculated grades. This important rarity was sold to an astute floor bidder for $29,900. Another standout was the possibly unique 1867 Paraguay Republic 4 Pesos pattern. Estimated between $1,500 and $2,500, the consignor was delighted when it was hammered down for $11,500.”

“The Ancients session also had impressive pieces,” Tucker continued. “A Bar Kochba War silver sela overstruck on a tetradrachm of Antioch brought well over the estimate at $2,350. An AR denarius of Marc Antony and Cleopatra in good VF achieved $2,990.”
