$1.88mm Quintuple Stella

Heritage Auctions recently helped set a record price of $1,880,000 to purchase a historic 1879 U.S. $20 Quintuple Stella gold coin (Judd-1643). It is one of only five known -- one of them is in the Smithsonian's National Numismatic Collection -- of a proposed design (pattern) with a denomination five times the value of the short-lived $4 "Stella" gold coins of 1879 and 1880. Hence, the name Quintuple Stella.

Graded PCGS PR64 Deep Cameo, the coin was successfully acquired by Heritage Auctions President Greg Rohan from the Legend Rare Coin Auctions sale in New Orleans on behalf of a long-time Heritage client. This coin's illustrious pedigree includes 19th century Chicago beer baron Virgil Brand, acclaimed Fort Worth newspaper publisher and American Airlines co-founder Amon Carter and Texas Rangers co-owner Bob R. Simpson.

"In addition to conducting our own auctions, Heritage works directly with many of our more than 950,000 bidder-members to provide expert consultation regarding their potential purchases from other auction houses, and we can even place bids on their behalf," explained Rohan. "Now, another of those happy members has an exquisite, extremely rare example of a historic gold coin that was proposed for use by the United States in world trade in the 19th century."
