1859-D Medium D Half Eagle, AU50
Low-Mintage Issue
1859-D $5 Medium D AU50 PCGS. Winter 44-HH. This is the
usual mintmark variety. Just 10,366 examples were minted, almost
all with the Medium D mintmark. The Large D die pair is extremely
rare. Both varieties combined, the estimated surviving 1859-D
population stands at only 175 to 225 pieces. This lightly
circulated Dahlonega half eagle displays lovely light orange-gold
color, as well as the faintest traces of satin luster that glow
around the devices. Surface marks and abrasions are generally
shallow. PCGS Population (Medium D variety): 21 in 50, 78 finer
