    Description

New Mexico Saloon Encased Cent Token, Near-Mint

1905 Las Cruces, New Mexico Encased Cent, Borderline Uncirculated. A chamberpot encased 1905 Indian Cent, virtually Mint State, and considered the rarest and most desirable encased cent, the only such piece listed in 100 Greatest American Medals and Tokens.
Issued for the Majestic Saloon in Las Cruces, New Mexico, owned and operated by Samuel F. Bean, nephew of Judge Roy Bean, the "hanging judge." The saloon burned down in 1905. The reverse lettering, GOOD FOR A SMILE, offered a whiskey in exchange for the token. Today, it is undoubtedly worth several smiles. Our consignor notes that he acquired this piece from Joyce Bean in 1980. Born in 1900, she was the daughter of Samuel Bean.
