To Ellis Bradford Wood by Liberty Magazine

Liberty Magazine Valor in Citizenship 14 kt Gold Medal. 136.8 gm, 57 mm. Marked on edge for "14 kt gold." Obverse: flaming sword upright in hand, glory and wreath around, outermost legend LIBERTY MAGAZINE VALOR IN CITIZENSHIP AWARD. Reverse: stylized laurel branch at left with two lengths of scroll unfolding across, above AWARDED, on scroll 1940 / ELLIS BRADFORD WOOD, below FOR / OUTSTANDING BRAVERY / IN THE WAR OF CIVIC / RIGHTEOUSNESS, with TIFFANY & CO. in tiny letters at bottom. Liberty magazine (1924-1950), a nationwide "nickel weekly," was the sponsor; at one luncheon for the award, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover was a featured speaker. The medal comes with a brown Tiffany & Co. presentation case (good condition) and a once-ivory outer box (staining, some tearing, name WOOD written on top and underlined twice).
