1793 S-3, B-4 Chain Cent, AU55
Exceptional Type Candidate
Tied for Sixth Finest

1793 1C Chain, AMERICA, S-3, B-4, Low R.3, AU55 PCGS Secure. CAC. This late die state, equivalent to Breen's Die State III, exhibits heavy clash marks in front of the face and below the bust, with field roughening below UNITED STATES as described in Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia.

Possibly as many as 500 examples of this die marriage survive in all grades, although only a few are equal to or finer than the present piece. Despite the significant population, only nine examples grade XF40 or finer, based on the EAC grading of Bill Noyes. Del Bland is slightly more generous, recording 10 examples that he grades XF45 or finer. We have not found this example among those recorded in either listing. Our EAC grade places this piece in a tie for sixth finest in the Bland Condition Census.

These coins were made under the direction of Chief Coiner Henry Voigt. Surviving account books beginning in April 1793, a month after the Chain cents were minted, identify Jacob Bay, Thomas Flude, and Jonathan York as press operators. Daniel Gerard was another individual identified as a press operator in 1793. Although little is known of these workmen, they are the names associated with the coinage of the 1793 cents.

While this example is a trifle blunt at the central obverse, the balance of details on both sides are exceptionally strong. Both sides exhibit splendid olive-brown with darker brown patina on the portrait. A trivial obverse rim bruise is located at 3:30, and it is partially covered by the plastic tab of the PCGS holder. Traces of faded orange color appear on the reverse, with flowline luster near the reverse border. A few planchet flakes and rifts on the reverse result from impurities in the copper planchet. Our EAC grade XF45.
