    Description

    1861 Three Dollar Gold, MS63
    Rarely Seen in This Grade

1861 $3 MS63 PCGS. The 1861 three dollar gold is challenging in Mint State, in part due to its low mintage of 5,959 pieces and its issuance at the outbreak of the Civil War, during which gold and silver coins were heavily hoarded for their bullion. Most Uncirculated pieces offered are heavily abraded, grading no finer than MS62. This Select example is conditionally rare, showing a bold strike and frosty straw-gold luster with pale rose highlights. There are no individually bothersome abrasions, although light chatter on Liberty's cheek and in the adjacent field precludes a finer designation. Still, a rare and attractive three dollar gold piece. Population: 16 in 63, 14 finer (11/15).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 7K5N, PCGS# 7982)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
