1886 Type One Cent, Blazing MS66+ Red
Sole Finest at PCGS
1886 1C Type One MS66+ Red PCGS. Although the easiest pickup
point for the Type One is the feather pointing between IC rather
than CA as on the Type Two, the reality is that Mint Engraver
Charles Barber undertook a subtle redesign of the entire obverse
master hub to create the "variety" -- which is technically a
different type. The design is shallower in relief and narrower. The
Type One pieces are seen more often but quite seldom with full Red
surfaces, and certainly not in the state of preservation seen here.
The prevailing blazing orange cedes to momentary pale blue,
fire-red, and grayish on the top of the 6. Currently the sole
finest at PCGS, making it a Registry Set essential. Population: 3
