    1903 Louisiana Purchase Gold Dollar, MS68
    McKinley Obverse, Two in This Top Grade

    1903 G$1 Louisiana Purchase McKinley Gold Dollar MS68 PCGS. The 1903 Louisiana Purchase McKinley and Jefferson gold dollars were the first of the new denomination, and they were struck in quantities far larger than the numismatic market would absorb. Each of the two kinds was struck in the amount of 125,000 coins, but all save an estimated 17,500 of each type were melted. Most survivors, even certified ones, average out into the lower Mint State grades, with planchet problems and, especially, excessive surface contact marks being the limiting criteria.

    It is a wondrous event to see a Louisiana Purchase gold dollar as pristinely preserved as is this coin. Thick, rich, frosty luster occupies surfaces are completely free of any contact above the negligible level. The patina is largely reddish-gold but with considerable hints of greenish-gold peeking through. The strike appears fully brought up through both sides. Planchet roughness is minor, limited to the peripheral area above LOUISIANA and ST. LOUIS. This last point seems almost quibbling on a coin of such immense quality. Population: 2 in 68, 0 finer (2/16).
