    Description

1836 Classic Head Half Eagle, MS64+
Second Head, Large Date, McCloskey 4-D
    Ex: Pogue

    1836 $5 MS64+ PCGS. Second Head, Large Date, Breen-6509, McCloskey 4-D, R.2.
Ex: D. Brent Pogue Collection, in the custom PCGS holder. A substantial mintage of 553,147 Classic Head half eagles was accomplished in 1836, with nine different die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the McCloskey 4-D variety, with a Block 8 in the date and the lowest arrowhead away from the final A in AMERICA. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was also used to strike the McCloskey 5-D variety of this date. The McCloskey 4-D variety was probably first recognized by William Woodin and Edgar Adams in the early 20th century. Woodin described three varieties of the 1836 half eagle in the catalog for the 1914 ANS Exhibition, where his collection was on display. The McCloskey 4-D was described as having the 1 in the date high, and the reverse "5D wider spaced, one berry in branch."

The present coin claims a historic pedigree to the famous D. Brent Pogue Collection, certainly a mark of distinction for any coin. The design elements are sharply detailed throughout and the well-preserved orange-gold surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster. A small diagonal mark in the left obverse field, parallel to the nose, is the only noticeable pedigree marker. Overall eye appeal is tremendous. Population: 18 in 64 (2 in 64+), 2 finer (7/16).
