    Description

    1861-D Five Dollar, Reflective AU53
    Civil War-Period Dahlonega Rarity

1861-D $5 AU53 PCGS. Variety 46-JJ. The 1861-D is the final half eagle struck at the Dahlonega Mint before the facility was seized by the Confederacy during the Civil War, and it is one of the most in-demand issues from this mint of any denomination. The federal coinage of the 1861-D was 1,597 pieces, but a similar number of coins were later struck with remaining bullion after the mint had fallen into confederate control. Regardless of how many were struck in total, fewer than 85 pieces are believed to exist today in all grades. The combined PCGS and NGC population of 105 coins is likely inflated by resubmissions.

The present coin is comparable in quality to the AU55 piece in the Smithsonian Institution (graded by Garrett and Guth). The eagle's talons and the fletchings are poorly defined, but the strike is otherwise sharp. Each side displays satiny patina in rich orange-gold and violet hues, and some reflectivity in the fields. A brush of high-point friction accounts for the grade, while the eye appeal is strong. Population: 10 in 53, 20 finer (6/16).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25VM, PCGS# 8290)

    Weight: 8.36 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
