Description

1798 B-28, BB-118 Bust Dollar, AU53
Bowers Plate Coin

1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9, Close Date, B-28, BB-118, R.3, AU53 PCGS. Ex: Miller. Bowers Die State II. Actually, an intermediate state between I and II, with a single die crack to the left of the eagle's tail and only a slight hint of a developing second crack parallel to the initial one. The Bowers reference describes AU or finer examples as rare, and accordingly this very piece makes the list of Notable Specimens. A generous amount of mint luster survives on the golden-gray and lilac surfaces that cover both sides of the coin. The variety is sharply struck in most regards, yet weakness at the middle field stars exemplifies the reverse of BB-118 -- the sole use of the reverse die. This is the Bowers Encyclopedia plate coin for the variety.
