1794 S-50 Head of 1794 Cent, XF40
Tied for Sixth Finest Known

1794 1C Head of 1794, S-50, B-43, R.5, VF25 Bland, VF20 Noyes;
XF40 PCGS Secure. Splendid light chocolate-brown surfaces have
scattered grade-consistent circulation marks. A small patch of
verdigris is noted over the ST in STATES on the otherwise pleasing
surfaces.Variety Equivalents: Maris 48, Frossard 4, Hays 57E, Chapman 32.
Obverse 22: Broken Lowest Lock. The lowest hair lock is broken just behind the shoulder on this obverse. This obverse is found only on S-50.
Reverse X: Closed Wreath. The left and right terminal leaves are joined below the E in STATES, closing the wreath at its top, and that feature is diagnostic. The right ribbon end hangs down, nearly touching the fraction bar and the final 0 in 100. This reverse is found on S-49, S-50, S-51, S-52, S-53, and S-54.
Die State III: A remnant of the shoulder loop is visible and the interior of the cap is incomplete. A delicate die crack from the crosslet of the 4 extends right to the bust point and across the pole.
Rarity and Census: Perhaps 45 or 50 examples survive in all grades, including two that Del Bland grades AU50, and one graded XF45. The census quickly drops with just six VF pieces. The present example is tied with one other for sixth finest known, and one of the better pieces is housed in the ANS Collection. Bill Noyes grades this piece VF20 with Average surfaces and tied with one other for fifth finest known.
Commentary: Ebenezer Gilbert and Edward Maris independently discovered this variety in the late 19th century, Gilbert assigned the number Hays 57 and Maris assigned his number M-48 to the variety. The several obverse dies that are mated to Reverse X are all similar in appearance and great care must be taken during attribution. The obverse is illustrated in Morley.
Boka Commentary: What more can be said when this rare variety in this extraordinary condition becomes available? Surely a great opportunity for the serious collector move up a notch or two.
Biography: Herbert Oechsner formed an impressive cabinet over several decades. In the catalog of his collection, offered by Stack's in September 1988, the firm notes: "Classic numismatic collections in the finest tradition are marked by breadth of subject and depth of specialization. Bushnell, Earle, Stickney, Jenks, Garrett: the roll of famous names echoes down the generations. Herbert M. Oechsner strove for decades to build a truly comprehensive and broadly based collection on their model, seeking to balance specialization in certain series with representative examples from the entire world of numismatic collecting."
