1794 S-52 Head of 1794 Cent, VF20
Tied for Fourth Finest Known
Ex: Daniel W. Holmes Collection
1794 1C Head of 1794, S-52, B-44, High R.5, Fine 12 Bland, Fine
12 Noyes; VF20 PCGS Secure. The steel-brown surfaces of this
pleasing cent exhibit lighter chocolate-brown on the high points,
especially on the obverse. Scattered handling marks and microscopic
pitting appears, primarily on the reverse. The obverse has two
diagonal lines of planchet lamination. A small reverse rim nick
encroaches on the T of UNITED.Variety Equivalents: Maris 6, Frossard 23, Doughty 26, Hays 9, Chapman 50.
Obverse 24: Coarse Hair, 79 Close. The treatment of the hair is distinctive with a coarse appearance. This obverse is found only on S-52.
Reverse X: Closed Wreath. The left and right terminal leaves are joined below the E in STATES, closing the wreath at its top, and that feature is diagnostic. The right ribbon end hangs down, nearly touching the fraction bar and the final 0 in 100. This reverse is found on S-49, S-50, S-51, S-52, S-53, and S-54.
Die State 1: Faint clash marks are evident below LI of LIBERTY.
Rarity and Census: There are 34 examples recorded in Del Bland's Condition Census, bringing the rarity down from Low R.6 to High R.5. However, finding a nice one is still an impossible task. The finest known grades VF35, according to Bland. The next best grades just Fine 15. The present example is tied for the fourth finest known in Bland's census and in Noyes' census.
Commentary: Sheldon was only aware of seven examples when he rated this variety R.7 in 1949. The rarity rating remained unchanged in 1958, when Sheldon accounted for 10 examples. When the variety appeared in the 1973 Early Cent Revision in Penny Wise, the rarity had dropped to R.6, and remained there in 2000 when Walter Breen's Large Cent Encyclopedia was published. Only recently have enough been accounted for to drop the rating to High R.5.
Boka Commentary: This rarity, after spending 20 years in the fabulous Dan Holmes cabinet, became mine following quite a battle. This "Coquette" deserves to reside in a top 1794 collection...good luck!
Biography: Charles Matthew Williams was a Cincinnati insurance executive who formed an extensive collection that he sold in 1950 to Abner Kreisberg and Abe Kosoff of Numismatic Gallery, in partnership with Sol Kaplan. Williams assembled an exceptional large cent collection that included the unique 1793 NC-2 Strawberry Leaf cent and a nearly complete run of 1794 cents. He also owned an 1804 silver dollar, an 1822 half eagle, and extensive territorial gold coins. Williams was born in Cincinnati on August 21, 1912, and died in 1998.
