1955 Doubled Die Obverse Cent, MS66 Brown
FS-101, Sole Finest at PCGS

1955 1C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, MS66 Brown PCGS. This major variety was created when an obverse die that had already received one blow from the hub was improperly aligned for a second impression. It is widely credited as one of the most dramatic errors in American coinage. According to Garrett and Guth, who rank this issue 74th in the most recent edition of their 100 Greatest U.S. Coins, the 1955 Doubled Die Obverse cents first started appearing in New York and Massachusetts, where they initially brought small premiums. Their inclusion in the Guide Book in 1960 and holes reserved for them in coin albums spurred collectors to seek out examples, which they do with vigor today.

Beautiful cherry-red, electric-blue, and peach-gold tones provide color to this lustrous, largely mahogany-brown key date cent. The strike is bold, allowing the viewer to fully appreciate the strong doubling on the IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date. There is a bit of softness over the beard and a couple of tiny specks on Lincoln's shoulder. This is the sole finest example at PCGS and NGC combined in the Brown category. It is also the only MS66 submissions across all color designations at PCGS (8/16).
