    Description

    1868 Eagle, MS61 Prooflike
    Reflective and Boldly Struck

1868 $10 MS61 Prooflike NGC. The 1868 eagle date shows a relatively high survival rate (but the issue is still far from "available"; the stress is on the word relatively) despite a mintage of only 10,630 circulation strikes, but few today have crossed the threshold to the rarefied Mint State grade levels. PCGS reports two in MS60 and one each in MS61 and MS62, while NGC offers four in MS60 and two in MS61 plus this lone MS61 Prooflike. This piece is bright and reflective auburn-gold throughout, clearly one of the early strikes from what was certainly a single pair of dies used for this emission. Trivial ticks and pecks appear on surfaces that boast a bold strike save for the absolute high points. Die lapping has effaced part of the left end of the scroll bearing the motto (was this die carried over from 1867?). Census: 1 in 61 Prooflike, 0 finer (7/16).
