Description
1992-D Cent, MS65 Red
Very Rare Close AM Subtype
FS-901, Guide Book Variety
1992-D 1C Close AM, FS-901, MS65 Red PCGS. A transitional
variety that has the reverse of 1993. The design subtype is
identified by a close AM in AMERICA and distant FG initials from
the Lincoln Memorial, and was used on all proof and business
strikes for 1993. Apparently, a single reverse die intended to be
paired with a 1993-D obverse instead was used to strike 1992-D
cents, likely shortly prior to the date transition. Extremely rare,
the PCGS website (Jaime Hernandez) states "about 5 known" though
others presumably rest in obscure penny jars, perhaps never to be
identified. The present peach-gold Gem is pristine, without carbon or contact, and appears as struck with minor incompleteness of strike on the peripheral legends and a slightly matte appearance from microscopic gas bubbles beneath the copper plate. The population has not changed in the last three years. Population: 2 in 65 Red, none finer (11/16).
