    1881 Seated Quarter, MS68
    Tied for Finest Known

1881 25C MS68 PCGS. CAC. Briggs 1-A. The 1881 is scarcer in Mint State than many of the other low-mintage dates from this decade, and it is a rarity in Superb Gem condition. The finest examples are this MS68 PCGS coin and an MS68 ★ NGC (10/17); between the two, the PCGS coin is distinguished by a CAC endorsement. When we offered this piece in our 2009 Central States sale, it realized $20,700. Neither MS68 coin has been seen at auction since.

The silky silver-white surfaces display occasional wisps of nearly imperceptible tan color. The strike is sharp save for on a few of the star radials, which are often weak on this issue. Virtually pristine surfaces show a tiny fleck near star 3 that will identify the pedigree.

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
