    1842 Small Date Eagle, MS63
Single Finest Example of This Rare Type

1842 $10 Small Date MS63 PCGS. The 1842 Small Date eagle is roughly twice as rare as the later Large Date variant with only 18,623 pieces struck. Prior to this sale, the finest 1842 Small Date eagle made available at public auction was the Harry W. Bass, Jr. coin graded MS62 by PCGS. Garrett and Guth knew of this Select Uncirculated example when they wrote their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins in 2006. They allowed for the possibility that the Bass coin was the finest extant and had potentially upgraded to MS63, but that is not the case. This incredible representative is almost certainly a different coin based on the Bass plates. It also fails to match the Brilliant Uncirculated example offered in Bowers and Merena's Brilliant and Sieck sale (1/1992, lot 1435), which according to the description was at one point graded MS62 by PCGS.

While the prior whereabouts of this Small Date eagle remain a mystery, its status as the finest known is clear. The devices are virtually fully rendered. Only the lower stars lack radials, but the curls, feathers, talons, and fletchings are razor-sharp. Medium yellow-gold surfaces exhibit a trace of semiprooflikeness in the fields, where minimal chatter is seen. The only pedigree markers are a handful of coppery alloy spots and a tick on the chin. Population: 1 in 63, 0 finer (1/18).
