    1863-S Ten Dollar, MS60
One of Three Mint State Survivors
    Only 10,000 Coins Struck

1863-S $10 MS60 PCGS. Eagle output in the California mint continued its descent in 1863. Only 10,000 pieces were struck that year. A dismal survival rate of about 0.5% accounts for the estimated 50 to 60 pieces known. There are just three Uncirculated 1863-S ten dollar gold coins extant: This piece, and one MS61 representative each at PCGS and NGC. We cannot find any prior appearance for this coin over the past 25 years, and it may not have been made available publicly since it was sent to PCGS in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

Shades of peach-gold reveal scattered orange accents throughout this frosty Condition Census ten. There are thin, wispy abrasions on each side that limit the grade, but the coin still appears finer than assessed almost three decades ago. Uniformly sharp. Housed in an old green label holder. Population: 1 in 60, 1 finer (1/18).
