    1864 Eagle, MS60
    Conditionally Rare

1864 $10 MS60 PCGS. Gold coins did not circulate east of the Rockies in the 1860s and Philadelphia production was minimal among all denominations. Only 3,530 circulation strike eagles were minted there in 1864. The San Francisco Mint added 2,500 more examples as the California facility concentrated on double eagle production. Add the preference of contemporary collectors to acquire proofs, and Mint State survival quantities are extremely low. For these 1864 eagles, only two examples are PCGS certified in Mint State (this piece and an MS61), and NGC adds three examples graded MS61 and a single MS63 (1/18). A few hairlines are noted in the fields of this satiny example that exhibits slight field-to-device contrast with brilliant honey-gold surfaces. An impressive and important example for the connoisseur.
