1865-S Ten Dollar, Lustrous MS60
Third Finest for the Issue
Finest Normal Date Example
1865-S $10 MS60 NGC. This is an example of the rarer Normal
Date variety, though collectors tend to get more excited about the
dramatic Inverted 865 variant, which is slightly more available.
Minor disparities in rarity fall by the wayside when
contextualizing a coin of this quality. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth
explain: "The quality of survivors is lower than average for a No
Motto eagle with most examples falling into the VF category.
Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated examples are extraordinarily
rare, and only one example has ever been certified at the Mint
State level (NGC MS-60)." This is that coin.Only two 1865-S eagles are graded higher: Both feature the Inverted 865 variety. One was recovered from the S.S. Brother Jonathan (MS64 PCGS) and another was found among the contents of the S.S. Republic (MS62 NGC). As far as we can tell, this is the first public offering of this highest-graded Normal Date representative in 25 years.
Lively, uninterrupted mint luster glitters across bright peach-gold surfaces. The strike is slightly uneven. Myriad wispy lines and scattered abrasions are unsurprising, considering the grade. The fact that this Western gold piece survives so well-preserved is astounding. Unlike the two other finest known coins, this piece is not of nautical origin. Census: 1 in 60, 0 finer (1/18).
