1877-S Liberty Head Ten Dollar, MS61
    Another Top-Graded Representative
    Overlooked Condition Rarity

1877-S $10 MS61 NGC. Our Permanent Auction Archives showed no appearances for the 1877-S eagle in Uncirculated condition from its inception in 1993 until 2014, when we offered the other MS61 NGC representative with which this piece is tied atop the Census. There is one other mint condition example in MS60 at NGC. None are graded so fine at PCGS. Thus, while the 1877-S is a generally overlooked S-mint issue from a mintage of 17,000 coins, it remains a significant condition rarity and is scarce in the absolute sense, too. Few examples are known above XF.

Vibrant mint frost is characteristic of a San Francisco product from this period. Light orange-gold surfaces exhibit an unsurprising number of abrasions for the grade. Strike detail is good despite softness on the first and final stars, and the lower portion of the eagle. Another spectacularly rare offering from this important collection. Census: 2 in 61, 0 finer (1/18).
