    1883-O Ten Dollar, AU58
    Rarest New Orleans Eagle
    Only 800 Coins Produced

1883-O $10 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1. The 1883-O is the rarest of all New Orleans Mint eagles and claims the lowest mintage of any gold coin struck at the Southern facility (800 pieces). Doug Winter reported a survival estimate of 35 to 45 coins in his 2006 edition of Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: 1839-1909 -- a number he maintains is accurate to this day and which is borne out by the certification totals, assuming they include several resubmissions. Fewer than 10 pieces are believed extant in AU condition (all levels), and a single Uncirculated representative is known. This near-Mint example formerly occupied the top spot in Winter's Condition Census. He noted it was "found in a Savannah, Georgia collection and was later sold by a New York dealer to another collector. It may possibly be the Golden I: 2738 coin." That New York dealer was Winthrop Carner, and the collector was Dr. Warren Miller.

Rich golden-orange color covers both sides of this amazing rarity. Bright surfaces exhibit noticeable reflectivity in the fields, delivering a degree of eye appeal unseen among the vast majority of surviving 1883-O tens. Strike definition is strong over the centers, with the usual flatness seen on the peripheral stars. A small mark appears on Liberty's jawline, and another nick is seen in the upper obverse field at the tip of the coronet. These serve as pedigree identifiers. Population: 4 in 58, 1 finer (1/18).
