Description

1918/7-S Quarter Dollar, MS62
Rare Perfect Die State Example

1918/7-S 25C FS-101 MS62 PCGS. Die State I, perfect dies. The 1918/7-S variety was created via the use of two different obverse hubs to make the working die. The first public recognition of the variety was in 1937. Since then, the overdate has become well know for three of its chief qualities: it is rare in Full Head, a key date overall for the series, and it is plagued by heavy die clashing and lapping. The latter, area, though is not an absolute quality but a progressive one. This cataloger has, over the course some years, compiled a complete study of die states for the 1918/7-S quarter dollar. The study reveals several fascinating insights into this issue, its creation, and its scarcity, and the full study will soon be publicized along with diagnostics for each die state. In total, seven distinct die states have been observed, including a Perfect Dies state, with no clashing, lapping, or cracks: Die State I. This cataloger has only personally seen four different coins in this perfect die state, including the present coin, two others in the HA archives, and one in person at the 2026 Texas Numismatic Association coin show. Of these, the present coin is the only one in Mint State. In the cataloger's opinion, the present coin is thus uniquely significant for the 1918/7-S issue.
Softly frosted surfaces show faint evidence of golden-russet color with scattered deeper patches, mostly around the margins. For an MS62, there are no large or mentionable marks on either side. The strike definition is predictably soft over the high points of the shield and Liberty's head, as expected, but the crispness of the perfect die state is readily apparent. Listed among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins.
