Description
1918/7-S Quarter, MS64 Full Head
Incredibly Rare in Full Head
1918/7-S 25C FS-101 MS64 Full Head NGC. Formerly FS-008.5.
Wischer Die State V. The typical middle die state with advanced
clashing and lapping but not yet cracked at the T in LIBERTY. The
1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter represents one of the most
sought-after of American minting varieties, and is an important key
to the series. The availability of 1918/7-S quarters in circulated
grades is evident from inspection of NGC/PCGS population figures
through About Uncirculated. However, Mint State examples are scarce
in general, and those with Full Head detail are some of the rarest
in the series. The late J.H. Cline famously suggested a couple
decades ago that as few as 12 pieces may have been struck with Full
Head sharpness. Modern population figures are somewhat higher than
that estimate, although Cline's perspective reveals a sentiment
that is still true today: The 1918/7-S quarter in Full Head is one
of the rarest and top acquisitions in the Standing Liberty quarter
series a collector can pursue. NGC and PCGS have certified only 54
Full Head coins in all grades today, including possible
duplications. As of August 2026, this cataloger (ZW) has documented
only 13 distinct Full Head coins grading MS63 or finer. The present near-Gem has an extensive known provenance dating back to 1999. It is one of the earliest overdate examples that the grading services certified as MS64 Full Head. The luster is nearly brilliant, with just the slightest blush of silver-gold on the radiantly lustrous surfaces. Three clear olive sprigs show on Liberty's headdress, and there is a clear separation between the hair and forehead. A few minor ticks barely preclude Gem classification. Among the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. NGC Census: 7 in 64, 0 finer (8/26).
