Description

Henry VIII gold Half Sovereign 1509-1547, type as S-2294 which was struck at the Tower mint with mm lis or pellet in annulet, and S-2296, with mm S, was either struck at the Southwark mint or the Bristol mint. The obv. mintmark seems to be mm #94, "Martlet", struck at either Canterbury or York, according to the Spink catalogue and is unlisted in gold. The rev. mm., while weak, appears to have the top of the 'W' apparent of the 'W/S' of Bristol. The coin is at least Fine for wear, but has the typical uneven strike of the Henry VIII issue especially in the area of the mm's. A coin that should be studied more.
